Old South Pittsburg Hospital

On April 6th and 7th, 2024, the Tuscaloosa Paranormal Research Group conducted a two-night investigation at Old South Pittsburg Hospital in South Pittsburg, TN. The group has visited this location numerous times, as it has become a personal favorite and a paranormal hotspot.

History

The hospital was founded in 1959 by a group of four medical professionals. The building consists of a massive sixty-eight thousand square feet, with more additions constructed over the decades. The hospital later closed in 1998. Sitting on land rich in Native American and Civil War history, the area was a thriving Native American settlement in the late 1700s due to its abundant resources, including plant and wildlife, limestone, and a natural spring that continues flowing underneath the hospital to this day. In the summer of 1863, Union soldiers occupied and claimed the land until the end of the Civil War. The region grew in prosperity over the years as the railroad developed, opening various opportunities.

Spirits of OSPH

Whether the enhanced paranormal activity stems from the Native Americans who once dwelled on the land, the residual memories of the Civil War seeped deep in the soil, or the spirits of those that once walked these hospital walls, the ghosts at Old South Pittsburg Hospital make their presence known.

One of the prominent spirits is said to be Dr. J.B. Havron, a founder of South Pittsburg Hospital. On a fateful evening, Dr. Havron’s wife, Carolyn, was murdered while Dr. Havron was on duty at the hospital. Her murder remains a mystery. Dr. Havron soon after married a bookkeeper with whom he allegedly had an affair. Does his spirit remain at the hospital? Many guests, volunteers, and other paranormal investigator groups believe so.

Another well-known spirit believed to haunt the hospital is a little boy named Buddy. Buddy is beloved by paranormal enthusiasts. The story of Buddy goes that he was playing with some worms that he had found outside, as many little boys would. It turned out that what he thought were worms were actually a group of baby snakes. He was rushed to the hospital for multiple venomous snake bites but unfortunately succumbed to his wounds. Evidence of Buddy’s spirit has been captured by investigators on audio recording devices saying his name and the word, “worms”. His spirit is known to be playful, interacting with visitors, playing games, and responding to questions directed toward him.
